Swiss scientists reveal answers to age-related fatigue and muscle recovery

Have you heard of the new supplement for muscle recovery? A clinical trial of the gut microbiome, postbiotic urolithin A shows age-related muscle fatigue can be improved.

A new supplement encouraging a natural body process promotes human muscle recovery. Recent research reveals that urolithin A can play an essential role in improving muscles and extending activity, which is especially important as muscles deteriorate with age, exposing us to the dangers of frailty.

What does urolithin A do?

Urolithin A increases mitochondrial and muscle function while a metabolite, indicating that the body makes it from raw materials from fruits (primarily pomegranates). Nevertheless, not everyone can produce sufficient quantities of this antiaging molecule, and that’s where the supplement comes in.

As we get older, we get tired quicker, and the less energy we have – which seems universally accepted. Though, possibly, it doesn’t have to be this way.

The secret is in our mitochondria: the tiny organelles that pack a mighty punch in energy production. These minute powerhouses carry oxygen and glucose to create adenosine triphosphate (also known as ATP). The energy our bodies use for movement, growth and repair.

Mitophagy decline and what we can do about it

Like all things, mitochondria get worn out. This so-called decline in function is one of the marks of aging and connects to other processes, including:

Sensibly, our bodies engage in a maintenance programme called mitophagy: breaking down tired and sub-par mitochondria and reusing their molecules. As we age, our mitochondrial deterioration increases and the rate of mitophagy decreases. The result is less energy for repair, which contributes to aging and less energy for movement, making us feel like we’re aging.

Scientists have connected this decline in mitophagy to a loss of muscle function and other issues like cognitive decline and memory loss. Mitophagy also plays a role in protecting against Parkinson’s disease and tumour suppression, so it’s logical to increase the rate and here is where urolithin A comes into the mix.

It’s not enough to consume enough urolithin A components, as your body can convert those ingredients into the postbiotic. The answer to this process lies in your gut microbiome, to be exact. Overflowing with trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, our microbiome helps us digest food, regulate our immune system and produce important diverse molecules such as vitamin K, thiamine and riboflavin.

Everyone has a unique microbiome. About 40% of the human population has a microbiome that can take the ellagitannins in pomegranates, berries, and nuts and synthesise the vital urolithin A, which leaves some individuals without the secret weapon to muscle recovery. For 60% of us, it’s not important how much pomegranate juice we consume; we can’t make valuable quantities of urolithin A.

A new supplement that increases cellular energy

Urolithin A with Mitopure from Amazentis

Scientists at Swiss company, Amazentis took on this challenge. Research demonstrates that Urolithin A exposure to nematodes (roundworms) extends their lifespan and mitophagy.

Their subjects’ mobility also improved with age and raised activity. Urolithin A also enhanced exercise capacity in mice suffering age-related muscle deterioration.

Using urolithin A in human trials indicates that a precise dose is mandatory. Amazentis introduced Mitopure, a proprietary urolithin A supplement under the Timeline brand, including powder and soft-gel forms.

The trials flourished statistically, with two measures of improved muscle endurance in the supplemented group, compared with a placebo group. Exercises involving the hand and leg measured muscle endurance, with researchers calculating the gain in the number of muscle contractions until such time that fatigue settles in, between a baseline and the final test after four months.

An effortless and practical method to boost muscle recovery is available to everyone. A daily dose of Mitopure is equal to drinking six glasses of pomegranate juice, all without worrying about if you can convert it and even without the excess sugar.
