As a new year is upon us, many aspire to make positive changes to enhance our wellbeing.

Per Fox NewsDr Brett Osborn, a neurosurgeon and longevity expert, shares a groundbreaking guide to promote a healthier and longer life [1]:

Focus on strength training

Combat age-related muscle loss through strength training. Dr Osborn underscores the role of muscle in preventing not only frailty but also cognitive decline.

Basic compound movements like squats, bench presses, deadlifts, overhead presses, and pull-ups are recommended.

Keeping a training log and progressively overloading muscles ensure a consistent anabolic (muscle-building) response.

Strength training contributes to physical health and benefits cognitive function and memory [2].

Revolutionize your diet

Embrace a low-glycemic index, anti-inflammatory diet. Dr Osborn emphasizes the importance of choosing foods that score low on the glycemic index, such as vegetables and greens.

Avoiding high-glycemic foods like sugar, bread, pasta and rice is crucial. Liberal consumption of healthy fats, including olive oil, avocados, nuts and butter, supports the body in transitioning to burning fat instead of sugar.

This approach not only aids in fat loss but also helps maintain essential muscle mass.

Monitor blood pressure

Vigilantly watch your blood pressure, as it plays a pivotal role in averting age-related diseases. Dr Osborn advocates using automated blood pressure cuffs to log daily readings.

According to American Heart Association guidelines, maintaining normal blood pressure levels is crucial.

Clean eating, regular exercise, stress mitigation and certain supplements like magnesium, beetroot extract and omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to healthy blood pressure levels.

Stress management is non-negotiable

Effective stress management is a cornerstone of longevity. Dr Osborn highlights the importance of controlling cortisol, the stress hormone, which, when chronically elevated, is linked to various health issues.

Regular self-awareness of stress levels, incorporating activities like yoga, meditation, and beach time, as well as ensuring quality sleep, is essential.

Scheduling social interactions and vacations, preferably tech-free, reduces stress and improves overall wellbeing [3].

Check your bloodwork

Aging often increases inflammation, fluctuating hormone levels and challenges in regulating blood sugar.

Dr Osborn likens this to internal “rusting” and recommends routine bloodwork to intervene and optimize biochemistry.

Key markers include HbA1c, insulin levels, lipid profile, apolipoprotein B, CRP (marker of inflammation) and hormone levels [4].

Maintaining optimal levels through lifestyle adjustments, clean eating and, if needed, hormone replacement therapy can significantly impact overall health.

Dr Osborn’s 2024 guide revolves around a holistic approach to health. By optimizing diet, embracing strength training, monitoring vital signs, checking bloodwork and effectively managing stress, individuals can actively contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Remember, the journey to longevity starts with small, sustainable lifestyle changes.
