Avaí Bio and Austrianova’s Nevada joint venture Klothonova completed a GMP-grade master cell bank of genetically modified cells overexpressing the α-Klotho protein on 20 May 2026, according to the company.
The master cell bank will undergo third-party testing for pathogenic viruses and adventitious agents as a prerequisite to meet regulatory expectations, including FDA standards.
Klothonova, formed in September 2025 and jointly owned by Avaí Bio and SG Austria Pte. Ltd., is developing an encapsulated cell therapy built on Austrianova’s Cell-in-a-Box manufacturing pathway. The company claims the approach aims to restore circulating α-Klotho and address general aging biology and age-related conditions including kidney disease, neurodegenerative disorders and vascular disease.
Viral testing is reported as underway and program data is scheduled for presentation at the Second Annual Klotho Conference in September 2026.
The α-Klotho effort is positioned alongside Avaí Bio’s Insulinova diabetes program within the firm’s emerging cell-based therapeutic platform, according to the company.
