Bloom Science announced it has strengthened its intellectual property portfolio with new patents related to microbiome-based therapeutics for neurological disorders. According to the company, the patents protect engineered bacterial strains designed to modulate neural activity through the gut-brain axis.

The company said its IP portfolio now includes compositions, methods of treatment and manufacturing processes for microbiome-derived neuromodulators. Bloom Science claims these patents support its strategy to develop precision therapeutics targeting conditions such as epilepsy and neurodegeneration.

According to the company, its approach combines microbiology, synthetic biology and neuroscience to identify bacterial metabolites that can influence brain function. Bloom Science said its lead programs focus on engineering microbial strains to produce metabolites that may reduce seizures or slow disease progression.

The company claims the expanded patent protection strengthens its competitive position and supports the advancement of its pipeline into clinical development. Bloom Science said its long-term goal is to translate microbiome science into targeted therapies that act on neural circuits indirectly through the gut.

Bloom Science claims its integrated platform and growing IP portfolio position it to bring forward novel therapeutics for patients with limited treatment options in neurological disease.
