Bloom Science announced topline results from its Phase 1 clinical trial evaluating BL-001, a live biotherapeutic candidate targeting drug-resistant epilepsy. According to the company, the study demonstrated that BL-001 was generally safe and well tolerated when administered to healthy volunteers.
The company said the trial assessed multiple ascending doses of BL-001, with no serious adverse events or dose-limiting toxicities reported. Bloom Science claims the safety data support further clinical investigation in patients with epilepsy who have limited treatment options.
According to the company, BL-001 is designed to modulate the gut-brain axis by delivering specific microbial strains that produce bioactive metabolites thought to influence neuronal activity. Bloom Science said this approach could offer a new mechanism for reducing seizure frequency in drug-resistant epilepsy.
The company claims the positive Phase 1 findings represent a key milestone toward advancing BL-001 into patient-focused studies. Bloom Science said it plans to initiate a Phase 2 trial to evaluate efficacy and further assess safety in individuals living with epilepsy.
Bloom Science focuses on microbiome-based neuromodulators for neurological diseases and claims its platform targets microbial pathways linked to brain function. The company said its broader pipeline includes candidates for other conditions involving disrupted neural circuits.
