Eccogene has received a $50 million milestone payment from AstraZeneca following the initiation of a global Phase 3 clinical program for elecoglipron.

Elecoglipron is an investigational once-daily oral small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist being developed for cardiometabolic diseases, and the Phase 3 program includes Embold trials in people with obesity or overweight with and without type 2 diabetes and Eluminate trials assessing elecoglipron as monotherapy and in combination with dapagliflozin for people with type 2 diabetes.

Two Elevate outcome trials will evaluate the therapy in heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction and in chronic kidney disease on a background of dapagliflozin plus standard of care.

The initiation follows positive topline Phase 2b VISTA and SOLSTICE results showing an 11.8 percent weight loss at 36 weeks and a 1.9 percent HbA1c reduction at 26 weeks.

Under a November 2023 license to AstraZeneca outside Greater China, Eccogene received an $185 million upfront payment, has earned $295 million to date and remains eligible for further milestones and royalty payments.
