$115m financing and the launch of global Phase 2 trial suggest investors see respiratory disease as one of biotech’s next big opportunities.
A $115 million Series B financing would be headline-worthy on its own, but when the checkbook opens for a Phase 2 biotech developing a treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – and the investor list includes General Atlantic, RA Capital, Vivo Capital, Novo Holdings, Sanofi Ventures and KKR-backed Dawn Biopharma – it raises a bigger question: what are some of the world’s most influential life science investors seeing that the rest of the market is beginning to notice?
That is the story behind Expedition Therapeutics’ latest announcement. The San Francisco-based biotechnology company has closed an oversubscribed $115 million Series B financing while also dosing the first patient in its global Phase 2 clinical trial of EXPD-101, an experimental once-daily oral therapy for COPD [1].
The financing was led by General Atlantic, with participation from RA Capital, Vivo Capital and existing investors including Sofinnova Investments, Balyasny Asset Management, Logos Capital, Sanofi Ventures, Novo Holdings, Forbion, Dawn Biopharma, Adage Capital Management, BVF Partners and Venrock Healthcare Capital Partners.
There’s a growing belief that respiratory disease and particularly therapies that target the biology driving it rather than simply easing symptoms could become one of the sector’s next major growth stories.
COPD rarely dominates conversations around longevity, even though it is one of the world’s leading causes of death and gradually steals something many people take for granted: the ability to breathe without thinking about it. For millions of patients, treatments today help open the airways, reduce flare-ups and make daily life more manageable. They are valuable medicines, but they do not stop the slow biological processes that continue damaging the lungs year after year.
That gap is becoming increasingly attractive to investors. As longevity research continues shifting from managing disease to slowing the mechanisms that drive it, chronic inflammation has become one of the field’s biggest areas of interest. Inflammation is essential when the body is fighting infection or healing an injury, but when it refuses to switch off, it begins causing damage instead of repair. Many scientists now view this persistent, low-grade inflammation as one of the common threads linking numerous age-related diseases. COPD is one of the clearest examples.
Expedition’s lead therapy, EXPD-101, is designed to target DPP1, an enzyme involved early in the chain of events that fuels inflammation inside the lungs. Think of inflammation like a fire alarm system. Most current COPD medicines are similar to opening windows after smoke fills the room; they help people breathe more easily once the damage is underway. Expedition’s approach aims to reach the alarm panel itself, preventing the cascade that keeps triggering inflammatory responses in the first place.
Instead of offering another version of an existing treatment, EXPD-101 is attempting to intervene much earlier in the disease process. If successful, it could represent an entirely different way of treating COPD. The company also says it is the first to launch a global, randomized Phase 2 trial evaluating a DPP1 inhibitor in COPD.
Earlier Phase 1 studies supported moving the therapy forward after showing it was well tolerated, with no dose-limiting toxicities observed.
For Expedition, the financing validates the company’s scientific direction at a pivotal stage of development.

General Atlantic’s Brett Zbar, MD, Managing Director and Global Head of Life Sciences, will also join Expedition’s Board of Directors.
“Expedition is taking a differentiated scientific approach to addressing significant unmet need in inflammatory and respiratory disease,” he said. “The company’s transition into Phase 2 marks an important inflection point, and we are excited to support Yi and the Expedition team as they advance EXPD-101 through clinical development.”
The new funding will support Phase 2 development of EXPD-101 while helping the company expand its pipeline of therapies for inflammatory diseases.
Researchers involved in the trial believe the approach deserves close attention. James Chalmers, M.D., Ph.D., Rhodes Chair of Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, emphasized that COPD continues to be a top cause of global mortality, noting that existing treatments mainly address symptoms rather than the underlying chronic neutrophilic inflammation driving progression and flare-ups.
Chalmers explained that by selectively targeting DPP1, the investigational therapy could disrupt a crucial upstream inflammatory pathway to deliver a novel approach that improves patient outcomes, adding that they are excited to assess its safety and clinical potential in an upcoming global Phase 2 study for COPD patients.
Large institutional investors rarely place nine-figure bets on a single scientific idea unless they believe the opportunity extends beyond one product. In this case, the wager appears to be on a broader shift in medicine that increasingly treats inflammation as a root biological process rather than a symptom to suppress.
That is also where the story intersects with longevity. Healthy aging is about preserving the organs and systems that allow people to stay active, independent and resilient as they grow older. The lungs are central to that equation, yet respiratory diseases have often received less attention than other chronic conditions associated with aging.
