GLYLO – the weight loss supplement that boosts the benefits of exercise

Accumulated Glycation End products (AGEs) are the enemy you never knew you had, but help is at hand in the form of a weight loss supplement that has AGEs firmly in its sights.

Longevity.Technology: Exercise needs help. We not only need to stay focused, but we need to understand how and why our bodies lose weight. GLYLO is a patent-pending supplement developed by the Buck Institute’s Dr Pankaj Kapahi, who has taken years of research into Accumulated Glycation End products (AGEs) and positive results in clinical trials and formulated a product that can reduce appetite, help with weight loss and slow aging.

What is glycation?

The biological process of glycation occurs both in the body and in cooking – glucose molecules bond to other molecules, such as proteins or fats and when these sugar-added-molecules are broken down in chewing and cooking, amino acid-sugar complexes called Accumulated Glycation End products (AGEs) are the result. AGEs have different chemical profiles governing flavour and taste, but although they can be yummy, they have a big downside.

Glycated molecules are catalytic sites for the generation of dangerous free radicals and AGEs drive appetite, promote inflammation [1], cause cross-linking [2] and are implicated in several diseases, including diabetes complications and neurodegeneration [3]. In addition, popping extra glucose molecules onto amino acids, lipids or nucleotides – sugar-tagging them – changes them chemically and compromises their function. The end result is poorly-functioning cells and the slow deterioration we call aging.

What can be done about AGEs?

GLYLO calls itself the “first ‘anti-aging weight loss’ supplement” – it promotes the detoxification of AGEs, not only reducing their number, but engaging other targets that promote healthy aging.

Sugar itself isn’t toxic, but one of its glycation by-products, methylglyoxal, reacts with proteins, fats and DNA to create AGEs, so by targeting methylglyoxal, production of AGEs can be limited.

Something to chew on – how does GLYLO work?

Glucose is a sugar, a simple carbohydrate, and it easy to digest both mechanically, by chewing, and chemically, by enzymes.

However, this simple process is complicated by the glycation process which creates  certain toxic by-products such as methylglyoxal; these accumulate and combine irreversibly with amino acids, lipids and DNA to form AGEs.

GLYLO targets AGEs by reducing their formation and enhancing their detoxification to provide a better and simpler solution for AGEs-related toxification.

It helps in reducing AGEs, which in turn stimulates healthy aging.

In a recent interview with Longevity Technology, Dr Kapahi told us: “We believe that AGEs contribute to several age-related diseases and diabetic complications.

“They go up with aging and in patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy, and so on. So that’s why we think methylglyoxal is an important target. We developed GLYLO as a product to limit the production of AGEs in vivo, by targeting methylglyoxal.”

GLYLO has several components that are designed to act synergistically, promoting health by engaging multiple targets, including:

  • Reducing carbs intake
  • Promoting fat burning
  • Enhancing levels of vital molecule NAD+
  • Lowering amounts of AGEs
  • Reducing senescence
  • Promoting cellular repair pathways

What about exercise and weight loss?

We’re all told that if we eat less and exercise more, we’ll lose weight. The situation is far more nuanced than that as everyone’s metabolism works differently, meaning that some people get greater benefit from exercise or find exercise helps more with weight loss.

Research has shown that exercise plus GLYLO is better than just exercise in helping reduce fat accumulation – with the added benefit that it enhances muscle function [4]. It is a truth universally accepted that the modern diet contains far too much sugar, but carbohydrate is a staple element in many meals, helping to bulk out expensive proteins and keep you feeling filled up. However, cutting out sugar can open the door to cravings, but GLYLO can help you keep control by increasing activity and reducing cravings.

GLYLO’s triple action of increasing activity, reducing cravings and promoting healthy aging means it is a useful tool to help lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

GLYLO enhances ketosis

Usually our bodies burn carbohydrates for energy, and unused carbs are converted to fat and stored. Fat can be stored indefinitely, making weight loss tricky, but if carbohydrates are not available, the body will burn this fat, making things called ketones, which it can use for fuel. This process is called ketosis – often shortened to keto – and getting the body into a state of ketosis through diet and exercise is a common weight loss goal, although it takes time for the body to flip the ketosis switch.

Prior studies show that a large proportion (almost 20%) of ketone bodies can be bound to methylglyoxal [5]; consistent with this, the Kapahi lab has observed that lowering methylglyoxal levels almost doubled the free ketones available. In addition, prior studies show that methylglyoxal blunts the beneficial effects of exercise. Together, these studies support the observations from the Kapahi lab that lowering methylglyoxal and related AGEs can boost the effects of exercise, in part by enhancing ketones and also raising glutathione levels.

How does GLYLO help with menopause?

GLYLO can prove especially useful for women who are perimenopausal, undergoing menopause, or post-menopause as it can helps reverse some of the hormonal changes that happen at these times.

Menopause leads to the accumulation of AGEs through the increase of its precursor, methylglyoxal. Thus, GLYLO counteracts menopause-related weight gain in part by reducing glycation [6].

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) has recently shown to drive neurodegeneration and Alzheimer’s disease, acting directly on the hippocampus and cortical neurons to ramp up deposition of the proteins amyloid-β and tau and driving cognition decline. FSH levels go up with menopause and these increasing amounts of FSH could be responsible for the the disproportionate increase and severity of Alzheimer’s in post-menopausal women [7].

AGEs can have deleterious effects on various hormone pathways which can result in more FSH playing havoc in the brain, so taking GLYLO can help keep these hormone changes under control. Blocking the action of FSH has also been shown to reduce body fat and increase bone mass, meaning that GLYLO could help with osteoporosis and post-menopausal weight gain [7].
