Life Biosciences has closed an $82 million Series C funding round led by Alpha Wave Ventures, bringing its total financing to over $158 million, according to the company.
The proceeds will advance its three technology platforms addressing core biological drivers of aging: mitochondrial uncoupling, chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), and epigenetic reprogramming. The mitochondrial platform focuses on oral small molecules designed to increase metabolic rate and reduce fat in obesity and NASH models. The CMA platform targets removal of aging‑associated proteins via oral molecules, with applications such as neurodegenerative disease. The epigenetic reprogramming platform explores therapies that induce expression of three Yamanaka factors to rejuvenate cellular function across conditions such as glaucoma.
Funding will support acceleration of research and development activities across these platforms, with plans to initiate first‑in‑human trials for its first drug candidate by late 2022, the company said.
Additionally, Life Biosciences has appointed Bill Sullivan as chief financial officer. Sullivan brings over 25 years of corporate finance and fundraising experience in biotechnology, most recently with Applied Genetic Technologies Corporation and Merrimack Pharmaceuticals.
The financing reflects investor confidence in platform‑based strategies to therapeutically modify aging biology and to speed development of treatments for multiple aging‑related diseases, according to the company.
By targeting fundamental mechanisms of aging, Life Biosciences aims to deliver therapies capable of preventing, treating or reversing disorders linked to aging across diverse therapeutic areas.
