LyGenesis received a research award from Breakthrough T1D to support a thymus program exploring immune tolerance to pancreatic islet transplantation.
The award was provided to Dr Eric Lagasse, professor of pathology at the University of Pittsburgh and LyGenesis chief scientific officer.
The funding will support preclinical development of a novel approach for tolerance induction following allogeneic pancreatic islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes, according to the company.
The project builds on Lagasse’s prior work in thymic biology and immune reprogramming and is intended to reinforce the scientific platform underlying LyGenesis’s cell therapy pipeline.
LyGenesis is a clinical-stage biotechnology developer that uses patients’ lymph nodes to grow ectopic organs; its lead allogeneic cell therapy is in a Phase 2a trial for end-stage liver disease.
