Sana Biotechnology and Mayo Clinic announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate the development and delivery of SC451, Sana’s investigational hypoimmune-modified pancreatic islet cell therapy for type 1 diabetes.

The partnership will draw on Mayo Clinic’s multidisciplinary expertise to develop, validate and standardize protocols and processes for product handling, surgical delivery, post-treatment care, workflow optimization and clinical trial design, including biomarker identification to guide patient selection and longitudinal monitoring. Mayo Clinic will make an equity investment in Sana and holds an option for an additional investment under the agreement.

SC451 is designed to enable a single administration of pancreatic islet cells to support long-term glucose control without ongoing insulin therapy or immunosuppression, the company claims, and Sana expects to file an investigational new drug application and initiate a Phase 1 clinical study this year.

The collaboration is intended to support safe, scalable and consistent delivery of investigational islet cell therapies across Mayo Clinic and other care settings.
