MitoRx Therapeutics presented preclinical transmission electron microscopy data for its lead small molecule, MTRX31, at the 62nd EASD Annual Meeting in Milan, with an oral presentation on 30 September 2026.
In a diet-induced obesity mouse study carried out at the University of Oxford, the company reports that MTRX31 restored mitochondrial density per unit tissue area in the liver to levels comparable to lean control mice, reduced liver lipid droplets and restored glycogen flexibility, findings the company claims indicate a shift from fat to carbohydrate oxidation and repaired metabolic flexibility.
The company describes MTRX31 as a non-anorexigenic small molecule that targets elimination of ectopic fat by resetting mitochondrial function rather than suppressing appetite.
Earlier preclinical work showed durable, higher-quality weight loss, preferential fat loss and preservation of lean mass with greater weight loss than tirzepatide as monotherapy.
The data were presented by Xavier Jacq, Chief Scientific Officer of MitoRx Therapeutics.
