Personalized health and wellness company appoints former Vitamin Shoppe CEO to head up existing supplements and testing division.
Following its acquisition last summer by consumer-focused investment firm L Catterton, data-driven wellness company Thorne HealthTech has announced some big changes. The company is dividing into two divisions – Thorne, which will focus on growing its existing personalized supplement and testing business, and the newly launched Thorne Ventures, which is working on “the next generation of products and services that will advance scientific wellness.”
The newly created Thorne Ventures unit will be led by Thorne’s current CEO Paul Jacobson and will incorporate technologies from Thorne-owned Drawbridge Health and beyond, with the aim of helping people take a proactive and actionable approach to lifelong health improvement.
“The preventative health market continues to grow with new technological advances while constantly adapting to what consumers want – personalized scientific wellness focused on increasing one’s health span,” said Jacobson. “I’ve always been passionate about scientific innovation, what comes next in the industry, and how we can continue to bring new products that are data-driven and science backed to the market to help consumers be more proactive with their health and wellness.”
The Thorne unit will be spearheaded by new CEO Colin Watts, an industry veteran with 30 years of experience in the healthcare sector. Watts, formerly the CEO of The Vitamin Shoppe and Chief Innovation Officer at Walgreens, has been appointed to drive the development of nutritional products using clinical science, biometric testing, and multi-omics data.
“As an avid Thorne consumer, I am looking forward to working with the Thorne team leveraging R&D, upping our commitment to science and technology, and showcasing our deep portfolio of personalized offerings,” said Watts. “There’s a lot to be excited about as we continue to scale and I’m looking forward to working in lock step with Paul on Thorne Ventures and the broader strategic direction of the company.”
Wellness giant Thorne boasts over five million customers and is linked with more than 47,000 healthcare professionals, numerous professional athletes, more than 100 sports teams, and multiple US national sports Teams. The company operates a manufacturing facility in Summerville, SC, and collaborates with Mayo Clinic on health and wellness research and content.
