Smart mattress firm Eight Sleep valued at $1.5b in funding round to support shift ‘from observation to prediction to prevention.’

Sleep technology company Eight Sleep has closed a $50 million strategic financing round led by the investment arm of crypto giant Tether, valuing the business at $1.5 billion as it seeks to become what it describes as a “predictive, AI-driven health platform.” The company is the developer of the popular Pod smart mattress system, which uses sensors to monitor biometrics such as heart rate, heart rate variability and breathing patterns overnight.

Alongside diet and exercise, sleep is viewed as one of the most significant contributors to longevity and healthspan, and Eight Sleep’s bet is that sleep can serve as both a high-frequency measurement window and an effective point of intervention. The New York-based company said the new capital will be used to accelerate work on AI models designed to anticipate disruptions to recovery and adjust a user’s sleep environment before problems show up.

“We built Eight Sleep to fix sleep,” Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti told us. “But once you have clinical-grade biometric sensors in someone’s bed – tracking heart rate at 99% accuracy, HRV, breathing rate, every single night – you realize sleep is just the entry point.”

Initially, the Pod was focused on real-time optimization during sleep, but Eight Sleep is now targeting a shift from reacting to what is happening during the night to predicting what is likely to happen and intervening earlier. The company’s pitch rests heavily on the scale of its longitudinal dataset, claiming its models are trained on vast volumes of real-world sleep data collected from users around the world.

“We now have over one billion hours of health data,” said Franceschetti. “That is the foundation of the world’s largest continuous preventive health platform. The real power is in the longitudinal signal. When you track someone’s resting heart rate, HRV, and respiratory patterns across hundreds of consecutive nights, you see things episodic checkups will never catch. Subtle shifts in autonomic function. Deviations from personal baselines that emerge weeks before someone feels sick. The future of early detection is not a lab visit once a year. It is continuous, passive monitoring in the place where you already spend a third of your life. That is exactly where we are headed.”

Eight Sleep said it is building a predictive AI agent intended to model how a user’s night may unfold and prepare the sleep environment in advance. The company described the system as simulating thousands of scenarios that could derail sleep or recovery, and then optimizing conditions before the user goes to sleep. It has published a peer-reviewed study demonstrating the Pod restored the body’s natural circadian temperature rhythm during sleep and improved cardiovascular recovery markers.

“We started with temperature optimization and sleep staging, then added clinical-grade biometric tracking,” said Franceschetti. “The next phase is closing the loop: using AI to intervene proactively. Our system can already make over 16 automatic temperature adjustments per night based on each individual’s biometric signals. Now scale that intelligence to health outcomes. When you combine population-scale longitudinal data with AI that learns individual patterns, you shift from treating illness to anticipating it. Not just telling you your HRV dropped, but understanding why and adjusting your environment in real time to prevent downstream consequences.”

In further evidence of how seriously it is taking its health mission, Eight Sleep also revealed it is advancing clinical and regulatory efforts in the US, including FDA filings focused on sleep apnea detection and mitigation.

“Healthcare today is fundamentally reactive,” said Franceschetti. “You feel something, you go to a doctor, you get a diagnosis. We are building the opposite: a platform that moves from observation to prediction to prevention, all without the user doing anything differently. You just go to sleep.”

The new funding comes after Eight Sleep raised $100 million last year to accelerate its push beyond consumer technology, and its new investors are clearly keen on its shift from detection and feedback into prediction and prevention.

“We believe advanced personalized AI is the perfect pathway to understand and expand human potential,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. “Eight Sleep has the potential to define the future of health tech by building intelligence that learns, scales, and evolves directly with humankind, turning advanced AI into practical, everyday insights and enhancements about core human biology.”

Eight Sleep said it will deploy the new capital across three main areas: scaling research and development to accelerate predictive model development, expanding clinical trials and regulatory pathways, and deepening global commercial partnerships in priority markets.

“By helping people better understand sleep, recovery, and long-term health, Eight Sleep is laying the groundwork for a new standard in longevity-focused technology that is truly personalized, can function in any condition, directly on-device, resilient, and aligned with how people live,” added Ardoino. “The age of human-first health intelligence has started.”
