New AFib plugin monitors smart ring wearers’ heart rhythm at night, enabling those at risk of arrhythmia to track their condition.
Wearable health tech company Ultrahuman is claiming a world-first after launching a new atrial fibrillation detection feature for its Ring AIR smart ring product. The AFib plugin is offered via the company’s newly launched ‘PowerPlugs’ app store, which enables users to download a selection of free and paid features for their Ultrahuman devices.
According to Ultrahuman, Ring AIR is the first smart ring to offer detection of atrial fibrillation, a common type of irregular heart rhythm that can lead to serious health issues like stroke and heart failure if not detected early. Reportedly powered by FDA-cleared FibriCheck technology, the AFib PowerPlug monitors wearers’ heart rhythm at night, providing “daily medical-grade reports” that help users at risk or with a history of arrhythmia to track their condition and seek early intervention, if required.
“We’re launching our first few PowerPlugs with a novel game changing capability, AFib detection,” said Mohit Kumar, CEO of Ultrahuman. “This life saving technology comes with medical approval in limited markets currently and we’re aggressively launching new markets with regulator’s approval every few weeks.”
Beyond the AFib plugin, the new PowerPlugs platform allows users to download features relating to cardio adaptability, circadian rhythm, caffeine window, Vitamin D, pregnancy, and menstrual cycle tracking. Ultrahuman is also inviting developers to build custom algorithms using data streams from the Ring AIR through its developer platform, UltraSignal.
“When it comes to health, one size doesn’t fit all,” added Kumar. “That’s why we built PowerPlugs for people to pick and choose what matters most for their health and wellness. Over the next few years, you could expect thousands of applications to be built on top of Ultrahuman’s comprehensive health data platform.”
Focusing on integrating various biomarkers to provide insights into metabolic health, Ultrahuman also offers consumer products like the M1 continuous glucose monitoring sensor, preventive blood testing platform Blood Vision, and a home health monitoring device called Ultrahuman Home. The company secured a $35 million funding round earlier this year.
