Vincere Biosciences received a $2.7 million Small Business Innovation Research Phase II grant over two years from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, to advance a USP30 inhibitor through IND-enabling studies for the treatment of acute kidney injury.

The funding will support completion of key IND-enabling safety studies required to move the kidney-directed small molecule toward an Investigational New Drug application and first-in-human clinical development.

Vincere describes its approach as targeting mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired mitophagy, mechanisms the company links to kidney injury and impaired recovery.

The award also expands the clinical potential of Vincere’s USP30 platform beyond its CNS program for Parkinson’s disease.
