WHOOP enters $34.5m ARPA-H-backed bid to quantify aging

WHOOP joins $34.5 million initiative to develop the first FDA-grade Intrinsic Capacity score to predict healthspan.

Medicine has always measured aging indirectly. We track blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and hope that together they tell a coherent story about our future. But what if there were a single, validated score that captured something more fundamental – your capacity to function, adapt and remain independent over time?

That is the premise behind THRIVE (Transforming Health: Reclaiming Intrinsic Vitality for Everyone), a Stanford-led coalition awarded up to $34.5 million by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). This week, American wearable tech company WHOOP announced it is joining the effort [1].

The goal is to develop the first FDA-grade “Intrinsic Capacity” (IC) score, a predictive model designed to forecast major health outcomes up to 20 years in advance.

Intrinsic Capacity, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to the combination of physical and mental abilities that enable a person to live independently and age in good health. In simpler language, it is not just whether you are alive but whether you can move, think, recover and engage with the world on your own terms.

Right now, that capacity is not captured by any standardized clinical metric. THRIVE wants to change that.

Daily signals to long-term forecasts

The coalition is led by Dr Michael Snyder at Stanford University, in collaboration with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the Methuselah Foundation. Large decentralized trials, run in partnership with the YMCA and OpenCures, will test whether lifestyle interventions can measurably improve intrinsic capacity.

WHOOP’s role is to contribute continuous physiological data collected from its wearable devices – the kind of data that tracks sleep patterns, cardiovascular strain and recovery around the clock.

Individually, those metrics can feel abstract, but stitched together over years, they form a timeline of how the body responds to stress, adapts and recovers. If traditional medicine is like taking a snapshot once a year, wearables offer a time-lapse.

These data streams will feed into the PROSPR IC score. The model will integrate wearable data, health surveys, functional assessments and blood-based biomarkers across large longitudinal datasets. The aim is to predict outcomes, including mortality, hospitalization, multimorbidity and loss of functional ability.

Instead of waiting for something to break, researchers hope to detect earlier shifts in resilience, the slow drift toward vulnerability that often precedes disease.

“This research initiative represents a fundamental shift toward quantifying resilience, functional capacity, and the behaviors that shape long-term outcomes,” said Emily Capodilupo, SVP of Research, Algorithms and Data at WHOOP.

Why “FDA-grade” changes the conversation

Longevity has no shortage of metrics. Biological age clocks, wellness scores, readiness indexes. But most remain consumer-facing tools rather than regulatory-grade measures.

An FDA-grade surrogate endpoint is different. It signals that a metric can serve as a proxy for long-term outcomes in clinical trials. If the IC score earns that status, researchers developing therapies for age-related decline would not need to wait decades to demonstrate benefit. They could measure earlier improvements in resilience and function.

For investors, that shift could be catalytic. Aging has long been framed as scientifically promising but commercially slow. A validated intrinsic capacity score would compress timelines, lower trial risk and potentially unlock capital into interventions aimed at extending healthspan rather than merely treating late-stage disease.

Still, there is room for skepticism. Aging is complex – shaped by biology, environment, socioeconomic status and behavior. Reducing it to a single number risks oversimplification. The success of the IC score will depend not just on predictive accuracy, but on transparency, accessibility and ethical stewardship of data.

From elite optimization to public health

One notable feature of the THRIVE initiative is its stated aim to translate the IC score into an accessible at-home assessment priced under $100.

Longevity tools have often catered to early adopters – athletes, executives and the biohacking class. By partnering with organizations like the YMCA, the coalition aims to measure and improve intrinsic capacity at scale.

WHOOP itself has evolved from a performance-focused wearable to a broader health platform, offering features such as biological age estimation and Pace of Aging analysis. Its participation here reinforces that consumer wearables are becoming part of the scientific backbone of aging research.

The deeper question is cultural. If intrinsic capacity becomes measurable, does society begin to value resilience as much as treatment? Do we invest earlier – in sleep, movement, recovery, community – because we can finally see their long-term impact quantified?

The narrative is shifting from extending lifespan to protecting function. From counting years to safeguarding capability. If THRIVE succeeds, aging may no longer be assessed solely by the diseases we accumulate, but by the capacities we preserve.

For WHOOP, the move aligns squarely with its stated mission to add one billion healthy years to the planet. For longevity science, it represents an attempt to turn resilience into a measurable, investable and improvable target. And for the rest of us, it poses a quietly radical possibility that aging well might one day be something we can track, adjust and influence long before decline sets in.
